Dental Checkups in Skokie, IL

Dr. Mansi Raina

Why are regular dental checkups important?

Regular dental checkups are important because they help us find problems before they become painful or require more extensive treatment. A lot of people tend to wait until there's already an issue, but we want to be proactive and address concerns early. Regular dental checkups help us do exactly that.

How often are dental checkups recommended?

For many patients, dental checkups are recommended every six months. Some patients may need more frequent visits depending on their oral health and individual risk factors.

During these visits, the dentist examines your teeth and surrounding tissues. We may also take X-rays when appropriate to help identify problems developing between the teeth or in areas that aren't visible during a clinical examination. The frequency of X-rays depends on your individual needs and dental history.

Can dental checkups help prevent oral health issues?

Dental checkups can help prevent oral health problems because regular dental care allows us to identify changes while they're still small. For example, if we notice an early area of enamel demineralization, we may be able to recommend preventive treatments before a filling becomes necessary.

That's the whole point. We want to identify potential problems early and help you maintain your oral health through regular dental checkups.

What happens during a regular dental checkup?

At Affinity Smiles, when you come in for a regular dental checkup, a few things may happen depending on whether it's your first visit or a return visit.

We may take X-rays when needed, the dentist will examine your teeth, and the hygienist will evaluate your gums and periodontal health. We'll also discuss any concerns you have and review our findings with you.

During the examination, we also perform an oral cancer screening, which includes evaluating the tissues in your mouth and appropriate areas of the head and neck for abnormalities.

Sometimes we notice oral health findings that may suggest an underlying medical concern. For example, unusual gum inflammation or bleeding may warrant further evaluation, particularly when the findings don't match what we typically expect to see. In those situations, we may recommend that you follow up with your primary care physician.

We're evaluating your oral health as a whole, including your teeth, gums, and how certain findings may relate to your overall health.

What are you looking for during a dental checkup?

During a dental checkup, we're looking for changes that may not be painful yet but could become a problem later.

We check for cavities, signs of gum disease, cracks or damage to teeth, and possible infections involving the teeth or surrounding bone. X-rays may help us identify certain problems that aren't visible during the examination.

The goal is prevention and early detection. We want to help you maintain your smile and reduce the need for more extensive treatment whenever possible.

Can routine dental visits help with bigger concerns?

Another benefit of routine dental visits is that they give us an opportunity to discuss larger concerns, whether they're problems you've already noticed or conditions we identify during your examination.

Along with finding smaller issues, we can evaluate more significant dental concerns and discuss appropriate treatment options before they become emergencies.

How long does a routine dental checkup take?

A routine dental checkup may take approximately 40 minutes to an hour, depending on your individual needs and whether a cleaning is included.

That gives us time to discuss your concerns, evaluate your teeth and gums, and review any findings. If a cleaning is appropriate and scheduled as part of your visit, we may complete it during the same appointment.

Some patients may need additional time for diagnostic imaging, periodontal evaluation, or other concerns.

Do dental checkups hurt?

I'm often asked whether dental checkups hurt. The goal of these visits is to identify problems early and help prevent discomfort from developing.

Routine dental examinations are generally comfortable, although you may experience some tenderness if your gums are inflamed or you have an area that's already sensitive.

If something feels uncomfortable during your visit, let us know. We want to make your experience as comfortable as possible while completing a thorough examination.
